New Market area is arguably the largest commercial place in Chattogram City. The ‘Biponi Bitan’ market (this is from where the ‘New Market’ name came from) was established in 1954 with some 450 shops at that time. So, from the very start, it attracted a lot of people from around the city for shopping purposes. With the increasing popularity of the market, people started calling the surrounding area of the market as ‘New Market’.
The market can be reached easily from many sections of the city due to its strategic location near the center of Chattogram. Its proximity to the city's main business districts and the Chattogram Railway Station increases both its visibility and foot traffic.
The surrounding area is now used mainly for commercial purposes. So, you will find lots of hotels, restaurants, other shopping complexes and local shops around it. As transportation is readily available from any part of the city to New Market, it is a very busy area. Especially during the month of Ramadan, you will struggle to find even a small place to stand still.
