Meherpur, Khulna

The name Meherpur is etched forever in the historical tapestry of our liberation war. Meherpur is not just another district of Bangladesh but rather a hidden gem that reflects vigor and hope. This Meherpur area guide will take you on a virtual journey to discover Meherpur from a new angle.

Meherpur is a border district in the western part of Bangladesh situated within the circle of the Khulna Division. The west side of Meherpur is surrounded by the West Bengal state of India. Chuadanga, Munsiganj, and Kustia are other districts of Bangladesh that share a border with Meherpur.

Even though area-wise Meherpur is only 716.08 sq km, it bears historical and geographical significance. The district comprises 03 upazilas, namely, Meherpur Sadar, Mujibnagar, and Gangni Upazila, 03 thanas, 2 municipalities, 18 unions, 199 mouzas, and 255 villages.

Meherpur was initially set on the bank of the Bhairav River. Other than Bhairav, Mathavanga, Kajla, and Chewati are prominent rivers. However, the condition of these rivers is very gruesome and troubling. Once an affluent riverine district, Meherpur has now almost washed up these significant rivers.

The poor condition of rivers has also altered the lifestyle of the residents. The land is relatively depleted, and water flow is lower than usual. This affects agriculture and the production of crops and vegetables. Meherpur's livelihood is primarily on fruit cultivation, especially mango and litchi.

Another area of livelihood in this area is tourism. Due to the historical significance and establishment of monuments and memorials to commemorate the history, many local and foreign tourists visit Meherpur annually.

Mujibnagar Liberation War Memorial Complex and Amrakanan are the most visited places, especially in April. This upsurge in tourism has boosted the economy of Meherpur, particularly at the Mujibnagar upazila.

Perceiving the potentiality of Meherpur in tourism, many local entrepreneurs have invested in hotel businesses. If you visit Meherpur, you will find the finest hotels and accommodations. Meherpur also promises to be an uprising city with many urban facilities.

As the Darshana port is adjacent to Meherpur, the trade and commerce sector is also in bloom. Whether you want to reside permanently or visit as a retreat, Meherpur welcomes you warmly.
