Khulna is the third largest city of Bangladesh located on the banks of Rupsa and Bhairab rivers. A large part of the Greater Sundarbans is located in Khulna. The total area of Khulna district is 4394.46 square kilometers. It is part of the Ganga delta and the world's largest river delta. In 1990 Khulna became a City Corporation. The total population of Khulna district is 2,318,527. Khulna is one of the artistic centers of Bangladesh. It has the second largest sea port of Bangladesh, Mongla Sea Port. The earlier name of Khulna was Jahanabad.

Khulna was part of the ancient kingdom of Bengal and Samatat. This city is working equally to maintain the balance of the Sundarbans environment on the one hand for trade and on the other hand.
