South Surma is an important metropolitan police station in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. It is under Sylhet City Corporation. The economic importance of the area is immense as it is well connected by river, land, and rail. Sylhet district is famous for its pristine green environment, hilly surroundings, and vibrant culture, which make it a popular tourist area in Bangladesh. South Surma of this district is known for its lush greenery, tea gardens, and hilly terrain. All the wards and unions of this area have electricity facilities. The law and order situation in the area is normal and satisfactory. South Surma thana was formed in 1983 and the thana was converted into upazila in 2005.
Surma River is a boon for the people living in this region. This river fulfills other daily needs including irrigation and transportation. The tea gardens and agricultural products of this area contribute well to the country's economy. Tea Gardens, Jaflong and Lalakhal River, Ratargul Swamp Forest, Hazrat Shah Jalal Mazar, Madhobkundo Waterfall, etc. are near from this area.Sylhet Education Board Building, Divisional Commissioner's Office, DIG Sylhet Range Office, Technical Women's Training Center, and several government institutions are located in this Ares.The total cultivated land – 15,760 hectares. The main crops here are tea, paddy, wheat, betel nut, and fragrant rice. And the main fruits are mango, pineapple, lemon, cadbel, and guava.The area is located next to Surma River.The climate of this area is mild. It experiences heavy rainfall during monsoons, considerable humidity during summers, and fairly cool winters. It is surrounded by lush green hills and forest.Fenchuganj upazila and Balaganj upazila are in the south of this upazila, Golapganj upazila in the east, Biswanath upazila in the west.
