Muktagacha is an upazila or sub-district of Mymensingh District. It is located only 16 kilometers west of the Mymensingh town area. History shows that the area was first known as Binodbari. However, when the kind of Natore moved to the area, it was changed to Muktagacha after an inhabitant of the village named Muktaram Karmakar presented the king’s family with a gold lampstand known as Gacha by the locals.

It was turned into a thana area in 1969 but established as an upazila in 1983. Now, Muktagacha has a land area of 314.70 square kilometers and a population of 4,60,381 (2022 Census). It has 1 pourashava, 10 unions, and 283 villages. While some of the population has been moving to the Upazila Sadar area to access better lifestyles and facilities, most still live in rural areas.
