Gangachara, Rangpur
Rangpur, which is a well-known district of Bangladesh, has 8 upazilas or sub-districts. One of them is Gangachara, located in the northwestern part of the district. It is about 10.2 kilometers from the Rangpur Sadar, near the Teesta River. Being in the north near the river gives the upazila a tropical environment. Gangchara used to be a small region of Rangpur. It is said that the Gangachara Thana was formed in 1908 or 1910, but some documents show that it was established in 1917. Later, it was upgraded into a sub-district in 1984 and into a Model Thana in 2011.
Gangachara Upazila has a land area of 269.69 square kilometers and a population of around 2,86,730 (2022 Census). It has 9 unions, 87 mouzas, and 123 villages. Until recently, the area’s people lived by the rules of the British and zamindars. However, people’s lifestyles have changed over time.
Now, the people in Gangachara Upazila live on various economic sources, such as agriculture, pottery, industry, non-agriculture labor, trade and communication, etc. With the help of various NGOs, the number of people engaged in earning has increased. Moreover, the upazila has several Benaroshi Pollis and sarees from the upazila are sold across the country.
Along with the economy, communication facilities have also increased in recent years. Rivers play a vital role when it comes to making trades with various locations unavailable by road. The villages of Gangachar are connected to the upazila sadar and are from there to Rangpur city by road. There are also many bridges, with the Gangchara Bridge over the Teesta River being a significant one.
The upazila also has several ancient and notable landmarks, such as Kuthipara Neel Kuthi, the remains of Mahipur Zamindar Bari, Mandrain Pakhi Jame Mosque, Vinnya Jagat Amusement Park, etc.
