Gangchara used to be a small region of Rangpur. It is said that the Gangachara Thana was formed in 1908 or 1910, but some documents show that it was established in 1917. Later, it was upgraded into a sub-district in 1984 and into a Model Thana in 2011.

Moreover, the upazila has several Benaroshi Pollis and sarees from the upazila are sold across the country.

Along with the economy, communication facilities have also increased in recent years. Rivers play a vital role when it comes to making trades with various locations unavailable by road. The villages of Gangachar are connected to the upazila sadar and are from there to Rangpur city by road. There are also many bridges, with the Gangchara Bridge over the Teesta River being a significant one.
