Rangpur
Located in the northern part of Bangladesh, Rangpur is the 7th of 8 divisions. Until 2010, it was an administrative district under the Rajshahi Division. However, in 2010, it was established as a separate division and now has eight districts, such as Rangpur, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh.
The Rangpur division area guide shows that it is bordered by the Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam to the east and West Bengal to the west. Within Bangladesh, it is adjacent to the Rajshahi Division to the south and the Mymensingh Division to the north. The entire division has a land area of almost 16,375 square kilometers. According to the 2022 Census, the division's population is over 17.6 million.
The proximity to the Indian border enhances its geopolitical significance, particularly in trade and cultural exchange. Having access via roads, railways, and rivers, the convenient communication facility makes everything about the division more accessible. The Dhaka-Rangpur Highway is a major route that facilitates trade and movement.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy, with the region's fertile soil supporting the cultivation of rice, wheat, potatoes, and various vegetables. Additionally, Rangpur is known for its jackfruits, guavas, and litchis, which contribute significantly to the local economy. The region also has a growing industrial sector, particularly in agro-processing, textiles, and small-scale manufacturing.
One of the most impressive things about Rangpur is that it has a literacy rate of 70.75%. Among many of its educational institutions are Carmichael College, Rangpur Government College, Rangpur Medical College, Begum Rokeya University, etc. The division also shows the co-existence of its diverse community with its many mosques, temples, and churches.
There are hundreds of historical and modern landmarks in the Rangpur Division. However, some of the most well-known ones are Banglabandha Zero Point, Tajhat Palace, Town Hall, Mirzapur Imaambara, Kantajew Temple, Chandamari Masjid, Chini Masjid, Sura Masjid, etc.
