Savar, Dhaka
Savar might not be a popular or high-end area inside Dhaka, yet it is an important part of it. Located only 24 kilometers (15 mi) northwest of Dhaka city, Savar has a population of approximately 14 million.
Geographically, Savar is surrounded by Dhaka City Corporation, Manikganj, Gazipur, Keraniganj, etc. With an area of 280.11 sq/km (108.15 sq/miles), it is the 2nd largest city in Dhaka District and the 11th largest city in Bangladesh.
Anyone interested in the Savar area guide will be happy to know that it is a city filled with interesting places, heritage sites, and land filled with opportunities. But one of the interesting things about the city is its name itself.
During the 7th-8th century, there was a township named Shorbeshshor (Lord of everything), near the riverbank now known as the Bangshi River. Legends say that King Harishchandra ruled over Shorbeshor, and it is believed that the name Savar evolved from the township's name.
The remains of King Harishchardra’s palace are now one of the city's attractions. And over the years, this area has changed from a rural part on the outskirts of Dhaka to one of the busy areas due to industrialization and is now known for having some of the reputed RMG factories.
The National Martyrs' Memorial, Fantasy Kingdom, Nandan Park, Bangshi River, etc., are some of the famous and popular public places in Savar. Jahangirnagar University campus and its locality are equally popular with tourists because of their beautiful landscape. It also has a Migratory Bird Conservatory for “guest birds” that migrate during the winter.
