Built on the banks of the Karnaphuli River and the second largest city in Bangladesh, Chittagong is a city much older than Dhaka. Although Chittagong was founded in 1340, it got city status in 1863. Earlier name of Chittagong was Islamabad. Total area of Chittagong district is 5242.92 square kilometers. As of 2022, the population of Greater Chittagong region is more than 5.2 million. Besides, people from different parts of the country come to this city every day for commercial purposes. Chittagong city is a very busy and populated city.
Known as the commercial capital, Chittagong city surrounded by mountains, sea and valleys is also known as the Queen of the East for its natural beauty. The Chittagong Hill Tracts have steep forests, hills, various tribal communities including Buddhists, gorges, etc. There are also four valleys formed by Karnaphuli, Feni, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers. Also, Patenga beach is also located in Chittagong city. Chittagong is also called the land of 12 Sufi saints. This city is known as Bengal and Proto Grande.
The city has the Shah Amanat International Airport which is one of the most important, Chittagong division is also known for its rich biodiversity. It has one of the country's universities, parks, theater institutes, arts academies, the country's best educational institutions, important military ports, various industries, shipbuilding yards, largest oil refineries, etc., which play an important role in strengthening the country's economy and foreign relations.
Chittagong has a tropical monsoon climate. There is also a rich mix of regional languages, cultures and cuisines. Although this region is predominantly Muslim, people of different religions and castes and tribes have lived here together, symbolizing secularism. Chittagong city is a city of secularism, people are living together in this city in a friendly manner.
Utility facilities in Chittagong are also quite good. There is an adequate supply of electricity, water and gas. For which there are bus, CNG, rickshaw, riding share also there are facilities of private transport. Along with all kinds of facilities there are also employment opportunities which are really commendable.
Traffic jams, air pollution, deforestation, hill cutting, and unplanned buildings are a cause of concern for people. Which none of us want. All in all, Chittagong city is a commercial, dynamic and bustling metropolis that is an inexhaustible amalgamation of cultural, economic and social aspects of Bangladesh. If this is very challenging but a symbol of resilience and progress the city is constantly evolving.
